Instagram line break generator
Paste a caption, copy back a version whose blank lines stay put when you post. It works for Instagram and TikTok captions, counts characters, hashtags and mentions against each app’s limits, and runs entirely in your browser.

Counts are taken from the version you’ll paste, invisible characters included. Nothing leaves your browser.
Why the gaps vanish
You write a caption with a hook on the first line, a gap, two short paragraphs and a call to action at the end. You post it and it arrives as one solid block. What happened is that the app tidied the whitespace when it saved the caption: empty lines in a row were merged or removed, and spaces at the ends of lines were trimmed. A line containing only spaces counts as empty, so pressing the space bar on a blank line doesn’t rescue it.
Exactly when this happens has changed over the years and has differed between iPhone and Android, and between typing directly into the app and pasting from notes. That’s why the same habit can work one month and fail the next. The fix below works regardless.
What the tool changes, line by line
- Trailing spaces go. They’d be removed anyway, and they can stop a line being treated as empty when you want it to be.
- Each empty line gets one invisible character, U+2800. It renders as nothing, but it isn’t classed as whitespace, so the line survives.
- Blank lines at the very top and bottom are dropped, since they only push your text down.
- Everything else is untouched: words, emoji, hashtags, mentions and the order of lines.
Running a caption through twice changes nothing the second time, because lines that already hold the character aren’t empty. If you edit the caption later in the app, add new gaps through the tool again.
Caption limits on each app
| Setting | TikTok | |
|---|---|---|
| Caption length | 2,200 characters | 4,000 characters at the time of writing |
| Hashtags | Five per post and Reel, as announced in December 2025 and rolling out | No fixed cap published; a handful of precise tags is plenty |
| Mentions | Up to 20 per caption | No fixed cap published; tag only who’s in the video |
| Before “more” | The first line or two | A short opening over the video |
Pick the platform at the top of the tool and the counters switch to that app’s limits. Limits change from time to time; if the app refuses a caption the tool says is fine, the app is the authority.
How the counters count
Characters are counted the way the apps count them, so an emoji made of several code points still counts as what it is, and the invisible gap characters are included because they’ll be in what you paste. A hashtag is a # followed by letters, digits or underscores, not stuck to the end of a word, and not made only of numbers (#2026 isn’t usually treated as a tag). A mention is an @ followed by a valid username, and email addresses don’t count. The line total includes the gaps, which helps you see when a caption has turned into a wall.
Writing captions people finish
- Put the reason to read first. On Instagram only the opening line or two shows before “more”; on TikTok the caption sits over the video and competes with it. “Three mistakes I made pricing my first wedding” beats “So, a little story…”.
- Two or three lines, then a gap. That rhythm is easy on a phone screen.
- Hashtags last, after a gap. On Instagram, with five at most, pick the most specific ones. On TikTok, a few that describe the video help it get categorised.
- Keep important words plain. If you add a styled heading from the font generator, leave the rest in normal text so search and screen readers can read it.
- End with one ask. Save this, tag a mate who needs it, book via the link. Pick one.
Captions are one signal among many. The guide to how the Instagram and TikTok algorithms work explains what each platform has said it looks at, and the engagement rate guide covers how to tell whether a change is helping.

Instagram likes from $2.49If you want a new post’s like count to look less lonely in its first hour, an Instagram likes package or a TikTok likes package goes to one public post or video and starts within minutes. It adds likes only; comments, saves, shares and watch time still come from the people who see it.
